RFID Setup in BxSmartPrintPro

What is needed to use RFID in BxSmartPrintPro

This article explains how to use a Device Font text item in BxSmartPrintPro and how Zebra printer commands can be sent through a ZebraDesigner driver.

Contents

1. Device fonts in BxSmartPrint

A Device Font item uses a font supplied by the selected printer rather than a regular Windows system font. BxSmartPrint lists the printer's available device fonts and uses the selected font when printing.

When printing a Device Font item, BxSmartPrint selects that font in the printer device context and writes the item's text with TextOut. The text is therefore sent through the printer driver as device-font text instead of being rendered as an ordinary system-font item.

References: Zebra's ^A command selects a font for a text field; ^CW assigns an identifier to a downloaded font.

2. Add a Device Font item

  • Open the label in the BxSmartPrint label designer.
  • Choose Device Font from the text-item options to add a Device Font item to the label.
  • Select the new item and use the Device Fonts selector to choose a font available from the target printer.
  • Enter the text that should be sent to the printer and position the item on the label.

The font list is supplied for the selected printer. Select a printer whose driver and device fonts match the printer that will produce the label.

3. Configure Zebra command fonts

With the documented ZebraDesigner driver, open the Zebra printer's Properties, choose the Command Fonts tab, and select New to add a command font. The name assigned to that font becomes available to applications. Text printed with that font is passed to the printer as printer commands.

For ZPL passthrough, the ZebraDesigner driver documentation describes this path: open the printer's Printing Preferences, select Advanced Setup, choose Other for a ZPL printer, and enable Commands – Enable Passthrough Mode. The documented passthrough option requires ZebraDesigner Driver version 2.6.23 or later and is disabled by default.

These menu names are specific to the documented ZebraDesigner driver. Confirm the equivalent settings for the driver version and printer model in use.

4. RFID command example

When the printer, command font, and passthrough settings are configured, a Device Font item can carry ZPL RFID commands. For example, this command writes hexadecimal EPC data to a tag: ^RFW,H^FD<EPC hex>^FS.

Check the RFID programming guide for the specific Zebra printer before using a command with production labels.
